Using the noise meter

Help the class manage their volume with an animated scene.

1. Open Noise meter from the toolbar and choose a scene. 2. Click Start listening. Your browser asks to use the microphone: click Allow. 3. Choose how strict it is, right under the scene: - Quiet work: normal talking is too loud (good for tests and silent reading). - Normal: a few people talking out loud is too loud. - Group work: only a loud room is too loud. The line on the meter shows where "too loud" starts. The noise has to stay past the line for about a second and a half, so a cough or a dropped book doesn't set it off. Your choice is remembered on this computer. 4. If the meter barely moves when the class talks (some microphones are quiet), open Sound settings and raise Microphone boost. You can also move the line exactly where you want it.

The voice: when the class gets too loud, a recorded voice asks for quiet. In Sound settings, choose Shhh…, English ("Please be quiet"), Français, Español or Deutsch. Choosing one plays it, and Play plays the current voice again. At first it follows your board's language, and your choice is remembered on any computer you sign in on.

The noise meter listens in the browser only. Sound is never recorded or sent anywhere.

If nothing happens, see The noise meter can't hear the class in Troubleshooting.
